MoneyGram International Adds We Energies to Growing List of Utilities Offering Expedited Payment Solutions

MINNEAPOLIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May. 14, 2009-- MoneyGram International, Inc. (NYSE:MGI), a leading provider of global payment services, today announced an agreement that will enable more than 2 million We Energies customers to make in-person, cash payments at any of MoneyGram’s 40,000 agent locations nationwide. We Energies provides electricity and natural gas to customers throughout Wisconsin and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

We Energies is one of a growing number of companies providing additional in-person payment options as the current economic downturn takes a toll on consumers’ ability to manage their cash flow and pay bills in other ways. MoneyGram’s ExpressPayment allows We Energies’ customers to pay bills on the date they are due and notifies We Energies of payments the same day they are made.

“We recognize that in-person payments are a critical service to our customers during these difficult financial times, and we want to do whatever we can to help customers stay connected,” said Joan Shafer, vice president of Customer Services. “We Energies is working with MoneyGram as we feel it is important to provide our customers with an affordable and convenient option to make payments at established retail locations.”

One of the fastest growing payment channels is the walk-in or in-person cash payment. This channel is expected to grow as consumers become increasingly dependent on cash or emergency payment services. According to the 2008 Expedited Payments Forecast compiled by Javelin Strategy & Research, 31 percent of Americans are waiting longer to pay their bills and 15 percent are using more “rush” or same-day payment services.

“In this economic environment, it is more important than ever to provide consumers with fast, affordable and convenient payment alternatives,” said Greg Waltz, vice president and general manager of Payment Products at MoneyGram. “MoneyGram’s ExpressPayment service helps to minimize stress for consumers and ensures utilities get paid on time.”

Waltz adds that walk-in payment services are collected in cash, and therefore, are guaranteed funds. New payment tracking technology enables collectors to receive these cash payments the same day when the payment is accepted at the retail location. This solution is significant as it provides an additional option to customers who may be facing disconnection if payment is not received by the utility immediately.
